Legacy gaming capture
Elgato Game Capture HD: analog input, 1080p30 and legacy limits
Game Capture HD and Game Capture HD60 look like members of one family, but they answer different source problems. Elgato's original external USB 2.0 unit has a dedicated analog A/V input; the later HD60 does not. This guide treats the model as an earlier product for existing devices or a specifically checked offer, not as a current-stock recommendation.
Choose the input that matches the source
For unencrypted HDMI, connect the source to HDMI In and use HDMI Out for a separate display. For analog video, use the A/V input and the matching component or composite lead. Elgato lists S-Video only with a separately sold Analog Video Adapter. Its original manual names the supplied USB, HDMI and analog pieces for the historical package; used offers may be incomplete, so verify every connector and cable rather than relying on an old box photo.
Copy-protected HDMI is not supported. Some retro sources also produce nonstandard timing: Elgato cautions that a captured picture can appear on the computer while a modern television connected to HDMI Out does not display it. The card is a capture path, not a universal converter for every source/display combination.
Use capture and passthrough as separate requirements
Elgato's comparison lists 1080p60 passthrough at the same time as 30-fps capture for the original Game Capture HD. The old software interface independently states that 1080p recording is always 30 fps. The manufacturer also lists 720p60. A smooth display signal therefore does not prove that the recorded file is 60 fps, and choosing this product for a 1080p60 capture target would be a mismatch.
Check the old host path before shopping
The capture link is USB 2.0. Elgato's legacy Windows requirements name Windows 10 64-bit and an older Intel CPU baseline; its Mac requirements name Sierra and Intel-era processors. These are historical support floors, not a promise for a current OS. Elgato expressly marks Game Capture HD incompatible with Apple Silicon. The manufacturer's OBS walkthrough documents Windows, not macOS: install Game Capture HD software, close it, then choose the device as an OBS video source. Do not substitute the current Elgato Studio option for the older software name.
Analog source with a Windows host
For an earlier Windows setup, Game Capture HD's analog A/V input can take a supported component or composite source; the exact console mode and matching adapter must be checked before choosing a seller.
The original's analog input is the reason to consider this specific earlier Elgato. Read the Game Capture HD assessment and verify the source connector, television standard, adapter and remaining legacy software path against the actual offer.

When 1080p60 capture is essential
For an earlier analog source on Windows, adding a 1080p60 capture minimum rules out Game Capture HD: the original's 1080p capture is 30 fps, even though the HDMI output can pass a compatible 60-fps source to a display.
A Windows PCIe alternative is Magewell Pro Capture AIO, whose documented analog 1080p60 routes use component or VGA/component connections. Check the exact source lead and board connector; this is an internal PCIe card, not a USB substitute.

What a used offer still has to prove
The maker announced end of life in 2021, and current support pages warn that some old requirements may not match present systems. Check the precise unit, a working USB 2.0 Mini-USB cable, source-side analog lead, component adapter and host software availability.
