Elgato Game Capture HD60: HDMI 1080p60 and USB 2.0

This guide is for the plain Elgato Game Capture HD60, not the original Game Capture HD, HD60 S, HD60 S+, HD60 Pro or HD60 X. It is a research-based map of the documented signal path; it does not establish the condition or compatibility of a particular used device.

Follow the signal from source to screen

Start with a source that outputs a supported, unencrypted HDMI television signal. Elgato lists HDMI In for the game console or other source, and HDMI Out for a real-time display path. HDCP-protected content cannot be captured. If a console uses protected HDMI output, changing capture software will not remove that restriction.

Do not confuse the HD60's 3.5 mm socket with an analog video connector. Elgato describes it as Analog Audio In and specifically says it is line input, not a microphone port. The original Game Capture HD is a different product: it has an A/V video input for supported component/composite sources, whereas HD60 does not. If the job is digitizing an analog console, the HD60 is the wrong endpoint unless a separate, correctly selected video converter changes the signal first.

The device's USB 2.0 connection carries its H.264-encoded feed to the computer and powers the unit. Elgato describes the computer view as delayed and the HDMI output as real-time passthrough. These are two different destinations: the display output supports play-through while the host software receives compressed capture. A fast computer port or an HDMI display output does not change the USB interface or establish capture quality in a current app.

Use the mode ceiling, not the most familiar family name

Elgato lists capture up to 1080p60 and a maximum bitrate of 40 Mbps. The model's supported-resolution table also names interlaced and standard-definition inputs; its 480p support is specifically 720 × 480, not 640 × 480. The sources do not make this a 4K, HDR-recording or high-refresh device. In particular, plain HD60 should not inherit the USB 3.0 interface of HD60 S or later feature claims from similarly named versions.

For a used offer, ask the seller to identify the device label and port layout, then compare that exact product with the model review. The historical manual says an HDMI cable came in the box. It does not tell you whether the present offer contains the original USB cable, whether the unit functions, or whether any particular driver or warranty applies.

Treat legacy software as a host requirement

The model's legacy requirements page gives old Windows and Mac operating-system baselines and requires a built-in USB 2.0 port, a four-core processor class and at least 4 GB of RAM. Those specifications are historical, not a promise of support for an updated system. Elgato's current compatibility table marks HD60 as incompatible with Apple Silicon. Its old OBS/XSplit guidance is Windows-only and is tied to the legacy Game Capture HD device workflow; it does not establish compatibility with every current OBS version or Windows build.

Before planning a stream, confirm the exact operating system, driver, capture application, source format and audio routing together. Elgato's help page discusses audio synchronization for OBS/XSplit, which is a reminder to plan for capture/audio alignment—not a measured result for your own equipment. If direct-to-host preview timing is important, distinguish it from HDMI passthrough timing.

Which older workflow might fit?

  • Choose an HD60 assessment only when unencrypted HDMI at up to 1080p60 is enough, USB 2.0 is acceptable and the legacy host/app path is verified.
  • Compare the original Game Capture HD if analog component/composite video is essential; that model's 1080p recording limit is 30 fps, separate from its HDMI passthrough.
  • Compare HD60 S only as a distinct USB 3.0 Type-C product with its own software and host constraints.

For a same-condition shortlist using the earlier-model, HDMI and 1080p60 choices, open the finder with those choices. That route returns every currently authored match for the selected answers; it is not a claim that a particular seller's offer or current computer will work.
