A useful fit for

A specialist external capture option when the source is already SDI, an SDI display/monitor needs loop-through, and embedded or line-level audio routing is useful. The official spec also notes support for long 3G-SDI runs up to 150 m, a conditional distance claim rather than a cable guarantee.

The main tradeoff

This is not an HDMI card and should not be treated as a 4K device: its documented SDI input/loop-through ceiling is 2048×1080, and the detailed 1080p mode list ends at 60 fps. The unit uses USB 3.0 for host capture; USB 2.0 compatibility does not prove that every capture mode will be available on a slower host. A cable, converter, suitable SDI source and correctly configured software may be separate requirements.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is the USB Capture SDI Plus suitable for an SDI camera feed?

It accepts one SD/HD/3G/2K SDI signal with embedded audio and has one SDI loop-through. Magewell lists 2048×1080 as the maximum input/loop-through raster; the capture output table includes 1080p60. This is the SDI model in the reviewed USB Capture set, not an HDMI input device. Connect the source directly where practical and check the actual SDI standard and format.

Can the SDI Plus capture 1080p120?

Do not infer that from the broad 'up to 120 fps' claim. Magewell's technical table lists supported 1080p and 720p modes through 60 fps and separately lists 720p up to 120 fps. It does not establish a 1080p120 capture mode, so a 1080p120 requirement is not assigned to this model.

What audio and cable connections come with SDI Plus?

The device captures SDI embedded audio, accepts 3.5 mm unbalanced line-level audio and provides 3.5 mm line output for SDI embedded audio. Magewell lists a 63 cm USB 3.0 cable in the technical specification; an SDI cable and any needed source-side converter are not listed as included. The Magewell USB Capture SDI Plus is an external, single-channel SDI-to-USB capture device, part number 32050 and SKU 320500000. It is not an HDMI capture card: the source and loop-through connectors are SDI, and the hardware is meant for professional cameras, switchers and other SDI equipment. The product page describes capture of SD/HD/3G/2K SDI with embedded audio, a single SDI loop-through, USB 3.0 host connection and separate line-level audio I/O. This review is based on the manufacturer’s documentation rather than hands-on use or measured performance.

Match the SDI standard and recording mode

The technical specification lists a maximum input and loop-through raster of 2048×1080 at 60 fps, 4:2:2 10-bit. It names SD, HD and 3G-SDI standards, including 3G variations, and says 3G-SDI signals can travel up to 150 m. That distance is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for every cable, connector, patch bay or electrical environment. Magewell recommends a direct source connection without an additional AV converter for reliability and compatibility; if a converter is needed, confirm its output timing and embedded-audio behavior separately.

The capture data says up to 2048×1080 and up to 120 fps in selected modes, but the detailed output list is important: 1080p and 720p modes are listed through 60 fps, with 720p120 separately available. The broad 120 fps ceiling does not establish 1080p120 capture. This model also does not establish 4K capture, HDR recording or the high-refresh HDMI modes in the questionnaire. If the required input is HDMI, use a card whose actual input is HDMI rather than an SDI device with a converter added to the chain.

SDI loop-through and audio routing

The SDI loop-through can feed a downstream monitor or other SDI input while the host computer receives the captured signal. The technical page lists SDI BNC input and loop-through, and the illustrated product image shows the two coaxial connectors. Check the source’s SDI standard and required output timing before relying on the loop-through as a monitoring path; the model’s maximum input/loop-through figures are not a promise that every production format is accepted.

Audio is a meaningful difference from Magewell’s HDMI Plus units. The card captures up to eight channels of embedded SDI audio at the input, while its 3.5 mm line-in accepts unbalanced analog audio and its 3.5 mm line-out carries SDI embedded audio. The output list specifies up to two audio channels at 48 kHz. Use the operating system and recording application to select the desired audio route; the existence of multiple audio endpoints does not mean the app will combine them exactly as intended. The documentation does not establish a particular external mixer, microphone preamp or monitoring latency.

USB host, software and operating systems

Magewell specifies USB 3.0 and compatibility with USB 2.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1. Use a suitable USB 3.0 link for the documented modes; lower-link compatibility does not guarantee the same frame rate. The product page lists Windows, Linux, Mac and Chrome OS, and compatible applications including OBS Studio, VLC, XSplit, GStreamer, QuickTime and video-call software. Its technical specification lists Windows DirectShow/audio APIs, Linux V4L2/ALSA and macOS capture APIs. Those broad compatibility notes do not replace a check of the current OS version, capture application, frame rate and host controller. The conservative finder baseline here is Windows, USB 3.0, OBS, SDI input and 1080p60 capture. Magewell’s page lists Mac support but does not publish a complete Mac-specific mode matrix in the material reviewed for this assessment.

The box list includes the capture device and a 63 cm USB 3.0 cable. It does not list SDI cables or converters as included. The technical page gives a 110.7 × 56.8 × 17 mm case and maximum draw around 2.5 W. It lists a 0–45°C operating range and non-condensing humidity limits; consider airflow and space for the SDI cables when placing the unit in a production rack or bag. The published July 2026 firmware applies to SDI Plus Rev B. Verify the exact revision, update instructions, package contents and seller warranty before relying on an update for an older unit.

Who should compare it

Compare the SDI Plus when the source already outputs an SDI format within the documented range and a compact USB host connection plus SDI loop-through are useful. It is not a universal solution for HDMI gaming devices, 4K60 capture, 1080p120 recording, or HDR production. The HDMI Plus and HDMI 4K Plus are separate models with different input connectors, part numbers and capture limits. Before purchase, confirm whether the camera or switcher outputs SD, HD, 3G or a supported 2K format, whether embedded audio or separate line input is needed, and whether the receiving application exposes the intended video and audio devices. This assessment makes no claim about current retailer inventory, price, seller rating or independent testing.
