Magewell Pro Capture DVI 4K review

Single-channel PCIe Gen2 x4 capture card with one DVI-D input, single- or dual-link DVI support and HDMI 1.4 input compatibility through an optional adapter. Typical 1080p60 capture is the conservative assessed mode; no display output is listed.

A useful fit for

A single-channel PCIe x4 desktop/workstation route for DVI-D sources, or unencrypted HDMI 1.4 through a separately verified adapter, when a conservative 1080p60 capture target is the clear requirement.

The main tradeoff

The DVI-D connector is not DVI-I: there is no listed VGA/component breakout. HDMI uses an optional adapter, capture rates depend on timing and PCIe bandwidth, and the 4K-class raster text does not establish a particular 4K60 mode or display passthrough.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can Pro Capture DVI 4K capture an HDMI source?

Magewell lists HDMI 1.4 compatibility at the DVI-D input. The U.S. model listing says a suitable DVI-D-to-HDMI adapter is required and not included, so check the adapter, signal timing and package rather than treating the board as having a native HDMI socket. The source must be unencrypted.

Does its 4096x2160 capture raster confirm 4K60 recording?

No. Magewell lists a maximum raster and a rate ceiling that depends on the signal and PCIe bandwidth. The DVI family brochure's combined 2160p60/30 (4K/UHD) line does not unambiguously assign 4K60 to a specific 4K raster on this HDMI 1.4/DVI card. This assessment uses the clearly listed 1080p60 typical mode and does not match 4K60 capture.

Is this a DVI-I card that takes VGA or component breakouts?

No such analog route is listed for Pro Capture DVI 4K. Its product and technical pages describe one DVI-D input with single/dual-link DVI and HDMI 1.4 signal support. Do not transfer the DVI-I/VGA/component adapters from Pro Capture Dual DVI or the earlier Pro Capture DVI model.

Research position: this is an evidence-led desk assessment of Magewell part 11160, not a report of ownership, installation or personal testing. Pro Capture DVI 4K is a single-channel internal PCIe card built around one DVI-D input. Magewell also lists HDMI 1.4 signal compatibility; the U.S. channel identity material reviewed for this assessment says an optional DVI-D-to-HDMI adapter is needed and is not included. The exact model distinction matters: this is not the DVI-I/VGA/component configuration used by some of Magewell's other DVI-named cards.

Connector first: DVI-D, not a universal legacy input

The official product page and technical specification identify part 11160/SKU 111600000, one DVI input, DVI-D 1.0 single- or dual-link support and HDMI 1.4 compatibility. There is no model-specific VGA, component, composite or S-video path in the reviewed product table. Don't transfer the adapter list from Pro Capture Dual DVI (11070) or Pro Capture DVI (11030): those are different cards with DVI-I inputs and separately documented breakouts. For an HDMI source, an adapter is part of the planned setup rather than a minor afterthought. The card's front-panel connector is DVI-D, and the U.S. identity source reviewed for this dossier describes the HDMI adapter as optional and not included. Confirm the adapter direction and signal support, and verify that the actual board and cable can carry the source's requested resolution, refresh and color format. A passive connector conversion does not add a second capture channel or make the card a display output. For HDMI, use an unencrypted source; Magewell's support note excludes HDCP-encrypted input from capture. No content-protection bypass is suggested.

4K raster is not a 4K60 promise

Magewell lists input and capture image dimensions up to 4096 × 2160 and says capture rates can reach 144 fps depending on image resolution and PCIe bandwidth. The DVI family literature lists typical modes including 2160p60/30 (4K/UHD), 1080p60/59.94, interlaced 1080, 720p and standard definition. Its combined “4K & UHD” notation does not resolve which raster supports which 2160p rate on this DVI-D/HDMI 1.4 device. It would be unsafe to turn the maximum raster, the generic 144 fps, or that slash-separated family-table label into a general 4K60 capture promise. This assessment therefore matches the clearly listed typical 1080p60 target, not the 4K60 questionnaire requirement. The card may be appropriate for a carefully specified DVI workstation or an adapter-based HDMI ingest route, but a buyer who needs a particular 4K mode should get written confirmation for the exact source raster, refresh rate, color sampling, link type, driver and application before choosing it. The model has no listed loop-through output, so the display connection must be handled separately.

Host and application fit

The host connection is PCIe Gen2 x4. That points toward a desktop workstation with a suitable electrical slot and enough internal clearance, not a simple USB-C laptop setup. Magewell lists Windows, Linux and Mac support and lists OBS among compatible applications; the reviewed material does not provide a Mac-specific mode table. The conservative authored plan is Windows, PCIe x4, one supported input path, OBS and 1080p60. This is a source-based setup assessment rather than proof that every motherboard, PCIe lane arrangement, driver revision, source timing or OBS configuration will work unchanged. There is one capture channel. The digital DVI-D source path and the adapter-based HDMI path are not concurrent channels, and no independent second signal input is listed. The card does not promise passthrough, 4K display forwarding, HDR recording or VRR. A high bit-depth input or maximum pixel dimensions are not a complete HDR recording chain. Likewise, Magewell's general rate maximum is not an ordinary guaranteed frame rate: actual capture depends on the input and the host.

Who should compare it?

Compare the DVI 4K when a DVI-D source, including a single- or dual-link DVI workflow, is central to the purchase and an internal x4 card is acceptable. If you need VGA or component, inspect the precise DVI-I card instead. If you need a native HDMI socket, HDMI 2.1, a gaming-display loop-through, or a simple USB attachment, look at a different model family. Even within this “4K” name, the supported source timing has to be checked rather than inferred from the title. The product page and a U.S. channel identity bridge support the 11160 part/SKU; they do not establish the stock, condition or package of a particular offer. Check the physical card revision, the supplied low-profile bracket, the optional HDMI adapter if needed, and the exact host slot. This assessment makes no current price or availability claim. No product or computer was physically tested for this article. It is an original review based on the cited manufacturer documentation and limited identity bridging, not a customer review or hands-on report.

Confirmed capture formatsInput and capture raster up to 4096x2160; the technical page states capture rates up to 144fps but qualifies actual rate by resolution and PCIe bandwidth. The DVI family sheet lists typical 2160p60/30 (4K/UHD) and typical 1080p60, but its combined label does not assign a clear 4K60 mode to this DVI/HDMI 1.4 card. This assessment uses 1080p60 as the conservative supported target and does not match 4K60 capture.
