A useful fit for

A simple one-source ingest option when HDMI or SD/HD 3G-SDI capture up to 1080p60 is enough and a 40Gbps USB4/TB4 computer is available.

The main tradeoff

Input-only: no analog input, display output, SDI loop or documented passthrough. USB-C shape does not mean USB 3 compatibility; the model tops out at HD.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does Express Recorder 3G capture 4K?

No. Blackmagic lists SD/HD capture through 1080p60 over its HDMI 2.0 or 3G-SDI input; choose a 12G-SDI model for documented 2160p60.

Can it feed an HDMI display while capturing?

The reviewed model page documents HDMI and SDI inputs but no video output. Plan monitoring separately; do not treat it as passthrough hardware.

Will an ordinary USB 3 port work?

Not according to the model specification: the USB-C host connection is rated for USB 40Gbps and the documented computer types are USB4 or Thunderbolt 4.

UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is an input-only capture device for one SD/HD HDMI or 3G-SDI source. The “Recorder” name is important: it is not the playback companion called Express Monitor 3G, and it is not the larger Express HD box. The exact model is small and pocketable, but its compactness does not make it an HDMI passthrough switcher or a 4K capture interface.

Two digital inputs, one HD capture path

The manufacturer lists one SD/HD 3G-SDI input and one HDMI 2.0 input, with embedded audio support on either input. Capture standards run through 1080p60. The signal-path advantage is simple: choose the connector your camera, switcher or unprotected console source actually provides, then ingest into a computer. The model page does not document an HDMI output, SDI output or source-to-display loop, so do not buy it expecting the source to continue to a television through the device. It also has no analog video input, which separates it from the more versatile Express HD.

Blackmagic specifies 10-bit SD/HD video connections and compatibility with popular capture and streaming software, and its current software list names OBS alongside other third-party applications. That is a documented compatibility listing, not a test of every codec, OS release or 1080p mode inside OBS. Check the selected driver version, exact input timing, application and any copy-protection rules for the source. Protected HDMI content is not a valid capture target.

USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 is the key host check

The host connection is a USB Type-C port specified for USB 40Gbps, with current Blackmagic documentation describing USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 computer compatibility. Do not infer compatibility from a USB-C connector alone or from a slower USB 3 port. This differs from older USB 3 capture cards and is not a general USB 3 fallback. Verify the host’s supported link mode, operating system, cable and driver before ordering. The manufacturer lists Mac, Windows and Linux support; supported operating-system versions can change, so check the current requirements when matching to a particular computer.

Because the unit is input-only, the rest of the capture chain must provide monitoring. Use a separate display path, a console or camera output splitter that is suitable for the source, or another output device if live display is a requirement. Avoid treating the computer preview as a guaranteed zero-latency monitor. The product is a straightforward acquisition device, not an end-to-end streaming or display solution.

Its USB-C plug can tempt buyers to treat it as interchangeable with older USB 3 capture devices, but the published 40Gbps link is central to the product configuration. Keep the host decision separate from the HDMI/SDI source choice: a matching video connector cannot compensate for a missing host link. Equally, do not assume a USB4/TB4 host can receive every protected HDMI source; copy-protection rules remain a separate limitation.

How it compares within UltraStudio

Choose Express Recorder 3G if a single SDI/HDMI source, compact size and 1080p60 ceiling are sufficient. UltraStudio Express HD adds analog input, audio/deck-control functions and professional playback outputs, but it still tops out at HD and lacks HDMI input. UltraStudio Mini Recorder 12G is the nearby higher-resolution capture alternative: it accepts HDMI and 12G-SDI to 2160p60, while using Thunderbolt 4 and providing an SDI loop output. The exact choice hinges on capture resolution, analog needs and host ports—not on similarly named product families.

Before purchase, confirm that the source is SD or HD within the published standards, that it is not protected, the host actually supports USB4/TB4 at the required rate, and your chosen software/driver accepts the desired mode. If monitoring or passthrough is essential, plan that path separately. This review summarizes manufacturer documentation and makes no personal-use or independent performance claim.
