A useful fit for

A strong technical fit for a production or event workstation that needs several HDMI sources in HD or one source at 4K/UltraHD 60p, has a suitable PCIe 2.0 x8 host path and can use AJA Control Room or the documented OBS workflow.

The main tradeoff

This is a PCIe capture-only card, not a USB dongle or display-passthrough device. Ports 3–4 are HD/2K-limited, AJA Control Room captures one signal at a time, and multi-input mode, HDR, host, software and storage requirements must be checked together.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can KONA HDMI capture a single 4K60 HDMI source in AJA Control Room?

AJA's KONA HDMI v18 manual specifies a single Control Room input up to 4K/UltraHD 60p on port 1 or 2. Ports 3 and 4 are limited to 2K/HD through 60p. Verify the host, signal timing, current AJA driver and storage path; this is not a passthrough claim.

Can I use all four KONA HDMI ports for separate HD feeds in OBS?

AJA's v18 manual and OBS v17.1 guide describe up to four HD inputs in the multichannel workflow, but not four 4K inputs. Configure OBS/AJA capture for the intended port mix and make sure the workstation can encode and store the combined feeds.

Does the KONA HDMI 4K input also feed a display while recording?

No display output is documented: AJA identifies KONA HDMI as a capture-only board, and its manual describes inputs without outputs. If you need a display passthrough path, shortlist another device with a separately documented input-to-display route and compare the exact format limits.

AJA's KONA HDMI is a four-input PCIe capture board for production computers that need more than a single desktop HDMI dongle. Its most important qualification is the split between the two pairs of ports: inputs 1 and 2 accept a documented 4K/UltraHD 60p signal, while inputs 3 and 4 top out at 2K/HD 60p. That makes the board a plausible choice for several HD feeds or a carefully planned 4K source, but the connector count alone does not tell you which combinations an application can use.

This is a documentation-based assessment, not a hands-on test. I reviewed AJA's current product and specification pages, KONA HDMI v18 manual and OBS v17.1 quick-start guide. Those sources establish an internal PCIe 2.0 x8 board with four full-size HDMI inputs; they do not establish the contents, condition or warranty of a particular retailer's offer.

Four HDMI inputs, but not four identical high-bandwidth paths

The physical layout is simple: four full-size HDMI input sockets and no HDMI output. AJA rates ports 1 and 2 for 4K DCI or UltraHD through 60p and ports 3 and 4 for 2K/HD through 60p. The manual describes two-channel 4K, four-channel HD/SD and mixed 4K-plus-HD arrangements, with the exact possibilities depending on the software or SDK in use. The product page likewise highlights two 4K or four HD streams, but those are not one universal mode matrix.

For one 4K/UltraHD source, AJA Control Room is the clearest route: the manual specifies port 1 or 2. AJA's OBS guide separately lists one KONA HDMI 4K/UltraHD input and up to four HD inputs. That is an app-specific distinction, not a reason to infer four 4K channels from four sockets. AJA documents other combinations through vMix and its SDK, but those modes are not interchangeable with an OBS or Control Room plan.

Each input carries embedded audio. AJA lists up to eight audio channels in a single-stream arrangement and up to 32 in a quad-stream mode. The selected application's configuration and the source's audio output still matter; port count does not promise a particular scene layout or tested stream.

Host planning is the main installation hurdle

KONA HDMI uses eight PCIe 2.0 lanes and is listed at 22 W typical, 25 W maximum. Check the motherboard's actual lane allocation and available slot space before treating any long x16-shaped slot as an x8 connection; the graphics card, storage controllers and other expansion cards can affect the system layout. It is an internal card, not a USB capture unit.

AJA's manual allows a PC, PCIe Mac Pro or Thunderbolt PCIe expansion chassis; for an iMac or MacBook, it describes the external-chassis route. That enclosure is separate, and the reviewed sources do not specify one universal Thunderbolt generation. Verify the exact Mac, enclosure, PCIe path, power and software release together. AJA lists Windows, macOS and Linux; its v18 macOS branch supports Apple silicon, while Intel Macs need an earlier supported software branch. Match the precise OS/driver release rather than reading “Mac compatible” as one timeless setup.

Video capture at these rates also creates a storage and host workload. AJA explicitly recommends that a system meet its current minimum/recommended hardware requirements and that storage sustain real-time media writes. The 4K specification is the card's documented input capability, not a guarantee that a particular PC, disk, codec and software version will keep up without dropped frames.

Capture is not display passthrough

AJA calls KONA HDMI a capture-only card, and its v18 manual says the Control Panel has active inputs but no outputs. A display connection is not built into the card. If your setup must feed a gaming display while recording, this model should not be shortlisted as a pass-through device; a separate routing or monitoring system would need its own assessment. The 4K input ceiling cannot be substituted for a 4K passthrough specification.

AJA does document HDR capture and HDR metadata handling in Control Room, including HDMI HDR material through 4K/UltraHD 60p, but also says HDR support depends on the application. The current specification distinguishes HDR10 and HLG signaling, while the product overview names PQ, HLG, HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. I assign the rate-specific HDR recording choices only to the Control Room arrangements documented in AJA's manual, not to OBS. A source must actually emit a compatible HDR format, and the capture application and downstream file workflow must preserve it. The available documentation does not make every HDR transfer function, codec, display route or application interchangeable.

Who should consider it—and what to verify

The strongest fit is a production or multi-camera workstation with a suitable PCIe path and an application chosen around the intended channel plan. For 4K60, connect the source to port 1 or 2 and confirm the Control Room or OBS workflow; for HD switching, verify the exact number of sources in the chosen application. Compare it with AJA's external Io 4K Plus for a different Thunderbolt-connected I/O layout, or with a consumer USB/PCIe product if console passthrough is central.

Before buying, identify the exact KONA HDMI board rather than a similarly named KONA model, confirm the seller's card condition and return terms, and check which bracket or cables are actually included. AJA's current product page supports the model's technical identity, but I found no universal standalone retail SKU or evidence tying an image to a specific seller package. The official product photo is useful for recognizing the four-port card; it is not proof of a listing's accessories or condition. Also verify current AJA software, OS, slot, storage and source-format requirements. The model is a specialized capture component, not a complete camera switcher, host computer or display-through solution.
