Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I capture a console or camera over HDMI directly?
No. The KONA 5 has four bidirectional SDI connectors and a full-size HDMI 2.0 output for monitoring; that HDMI socket is not a source input. Choose a separate HDMI-input product if the source is HDMI-only, or verify a complete SDI conversion path before buying.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its 8K specification mean four independent 8K feeds?
No. AJA lists 8K/UltraHD2 through 60p using all four 12G-SDI links for input or output. That four-link 8K mode does not create four independent 8K sources, and the OBS guide says OBS Studio does not support KONA 5 8K workflows.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it record 4K60 SDI and keep a separate monitor signal?
AJA documents simultaneous 4K/UltraHD capture and monitoring over 12G-SDI. The plan here is one 12G-SDI input and a separate 4K60 SDI monitoring/output path through AJA Control Room; it is not an HDMI-input gaming passthrough promise. Check the firmware personality, 12G source, monitor connection, workstation and 6-pin ATX supply.
Explore this need in the finder →Will a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure run this card from the host cable alone?
No. AJA's KONA v18 manual says the Thunderbolt 3 PCIe chassis must provide ATX connectivity and adequate power; KONA 5 uses a separate 6-pin ATX connection rather than slot power. Verify the exact enclosure and host before selecting a Thunderbolt route.
Explore this need in the finder →Does OBS make the full 4K60 and HDR headline a verified recording mode?
Not from these sources. AJA lists OBS for KONA 5, but its v17.1 guide distinguishes firmware personalities, says OBS does not support this card's 8K workflows, and gives format-dependent 4K instructions. The reviewed OBS plan is one 1080p60 SDI source; no 4K60 HDR OBS combination is asserted.
Explore this need in the finder →AJA's KONA 5 is a professional SDI capture-and-playout card built for a workstation that already has the right video wiring, PCIe access and power. Its appeal is not that it turns every input into a consumer gaming-capture path: it can handle one 12G-SDI 4K60 source while maintaining a separate SDI monitoring/output path, and it also reaches much larger 8K formats when the four-link transport, host and firmware are configured for that job. Those are different operating arrangements, not one universal simultaneous maximum.
Start with SDI direction, not the HDMI socket
The board has four bidirectional HD-BNC connectors for SDI and a separate reference connector. Its full-size HDMI 2.0 socket is an output for monitoring; it is not an HDMI input for a console, camera or protected playback source. AJA's current page and technical sheet list 12G, 6G and lower SDI families, and its diagrams show the SDI connectors changing direction according to the selected setup. That makes the card a plausible choice for a facility that already distributes SDI, but a poor direct match for a laptop or console that only offers HDMI.
Keep the base KONA 5 separate from the Io Xpand/KONA packages elsewhere in this library. The base item is a PCIe card with four SDI links and a dedicated power connection. An Io Xpand bundle is a different purchased configuration that combines the card with an external Thunderbolt 5 chassis and has its own host and package conditions. Do not apply a bundle's chassis or package contents to a loose KONA 5 listing.
4K monitoring and 8K acquisition are not the same mode
AJA lists 4K DCI and UltraHD through 60p, and its specification says 4K/UltraHD capture and monitoring can run simultaneously over 12G-SDI. The practical arrangement is one 12G source connected to an input and a separate SDI output carrying the monitoring/pass-through signal. That is why the review's 4K60 plan names a source input and a second output rather than describing the HDMI connector as a loop-through. Lower HD/2K modes also support simultaneous capture and monitoring.
The 8K headline has a separate boundary. AJA lists 8K 8192 × 4320 and UltraHD2 formats up to 60p, but the four SDI links must be allocated to either input or output for the 8K path. Host system attributes also limit which high-frame-rate and 8K formats are available. Treat 8K as a coordinated four-link ingest or output setup, not as four independent 8K inputs or an automatic 8K preview while capturing. The finder has no 8K option, so its highest video choice is not a proxy for that specialized system design.
Firmware personality and software narrow the claim
AJA Control Room and AJA Control Panel are part of the desktop software path for KONA 5, and the current product page also names OBS Studio, vMix and Wirecast. OBS support has real qualifications: AJA's v17.1 guide lists KONA 5 for Windows and macOS, but it explains that KONA 5 has separate firmware personalities for HD, 4K and 8K. The same guide says OBS does not support this model's 8K workflow and describes 4K behavior in terms of the loaded personality and link arrangement. It does not support an unqualified statement that every KONA 5 mode, especially 4K60 HDR, works in every OBS configuration. This assessment therefore uses OBS for one SDI 1080p60 source, while its 4K60 capture-plus-monitor plan uses AJA Control Room.
HDR is similarly a workflow detail, not a box to tick from a format headline. AJA lists HDR10, HLG, PQ and Dolby Vision support and SDI/HDMI signaling, but its own sheet says HDR support is application-dependent. Without a versioned application-plus-raster capture recipe for the specific mode, this review does not label a 4K60 HDR recording plan as verified. Confirm the selected firmware personality and application's own input and metadata support before building an HDR chain.
PCIe lanes are only half the installation check
KONA 5 is an eight-lane PCIe 3.0 card. Unlike several neighboring AJA cards, it needs a separate 6-pin ATX power connection rather than drawing its operating power from the PCIe slot. AJA's current specification gives 28 watts typical and 35 watts maximum. That is important when the card is considered for an external chassis: the v18 manual permits a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe enclosure only when the enclosure provides ATX connectivity and adequate power. A Thunderbolt 3 host port alone is not an enclosure or a power source for this card.
On Mac, check the exact computer and AJA software version as well. AJA's current Desktop Software v18 macOS installer is for Apple silicon Macs, while its support page retains other versioned software. That makes an older Intel Mac a driver-branch question, not an automatic no or yes. A suitable internal slot or separately powered chassis, physical clearance, lane access, operating system, firmware and target application all need to be checked together.
Who should consider it
KONA 5 belongs on a shortlist when a post, broadcast, virtual-production or live-production workstation needs SDI ingest/playout and its host can supply the card's lanes and ATX power. Its 12G path reduces the cabling burden for a single-link 4K job compared with older 3G-SDI arrangements, while the 8K mode adds a more demanding four-link system design. By contrast, a simple HDMI camera, gaming console or protected streaming box should be matched to an actual HDMI-input card rather than to the KONA 5's HDMI monitor output. For a production purchase, confirm the exact card rather than a KONA 5/Io Xpand bundle, the seller's included cables, the host's power connector, the required firmware and the application's supported raster. This is a documentation-based assessment; it does not claim hands-on use, performance testing, a measured result, current stock or a universal retail package.

Key specifications
Key details at a glance
| Signal input | Four bidirectional 12G/6G/3G/1.5G SDI video paths on HD-BNC connectors; the separate full-size HDMI 2.0 socket is output-only and the fifth bracket connector is reference, not a capture input. |
|---|---|
| Confirmed capture formats | AJA lists 8K 8192x4320 and UltraHD2 through 60p, 4K DCI/UHD through 60p, and HD through 1080p60. The four SDI links and selected KONA 5 firmware personality determine the supported route; high frame rate and 8K depend on the host. |
| Confirmed passthrough formats | For 4K/UHD over 12G-SDI, AJA documents capture and monitoring/pass-through at the same time using a separate SDI output path. This is not HDMI-input gaming passthrough. |
| Computer connection | Internal pcie gen 3 x8 card with a required separate 6-pin atx power lead; aja also describes a compatible thunderbolt 3 pcie chassis only when it provides atx connectivity and adequate power. |
| Named compatible software | AJA Desktop Software v18 includes Control Room and device setup/control software; exact OS architecture and driver release matter. / AJA documents KONA 5 with OBS Studio. Its OBS v17.1 guide requires selecting the appropriate KONA 5 firmware personality for HD versus 4K, excludes KONA 5 8K workflows from OBS and does not justify an OBS 4K60/HDR plan in this assessment. / AJA also names vMix and Telestream Wirecast support on the current KONA 5 product page; those apps are not separate finder choices here. |
| HDR recording | Aja documents hdr transfer metadata and hdr10/hlg/pq/dolby vision workflows, but the current evidence does not establish a rate-specific hdr recording plan for the named aja control room or obs arrangements used in this finder; no hdr capture selection is assigned. |
