Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Will IO-XPAND-04 capture HDMI from a console?
No. The included KONA 1 has an SDI input/output and no HDMI input. AJA documents a separate SDI monitor route, not an HDMI console capture path or HDCP bypass.
Explore this need in the finder →What is the highest selected capture mode?
AJA's KONA 1 table lists single-channel 2K/HD/SD modes through 60p. This review assigns a one-source 1080p60 plan, not 4K or a rate-specific HDR recording mode.
Explore this need in the finder →Does KONA 1 provide HDMI passthrough?
No. KONA 1 has an SDI input/output route and AJA describes SDI monitoring during capture; its model sheet does not list an HDMI input or consumer HDMI passthrough route. An HDMI source needs a different card or a separate SDI conversion path.
Explore this need in the finder →The IO-XPAND-04 pairs AJA's Io Xpand Thunderbolt enclosure with the KONA 1 PCIe I/O card and its card cables. It is a specific capture-capable bundle, not the empty IO-XPAND-01 chassis, and it is not interchangeable with the KONA 4 or KONA 5 packages. The included board has a single-channel 3G-SDI input/output route. That makes this bundle a better fit for one HD or 2K SDI source and a compact workstation that needs external PCIe expansion than for 4K, HDMI gaming capture or a multi-input switcher.

One SDI channel through 2K/HD/SD
AJA identifies KONA 1 as a single-channel 3G-SDI card with full-size SDI connectors, 16-channel embedded SDI audio, reference/LTC input and RS-422 machine control. The product-specific timing table includes 2K, 1080p, 720p and standard-definition formats through 60p where listed. It also describes simultaneous monitoring during capture. That professional monitoring route is not the same thing as a consumer HDMI passthrough output, and the finder has no 1080p60 monitoring choice to represent it. The card has no HDMI input; a console's HDMI output needs a different device or a separate SDI conversion path.
The package's host path is external Thunderbolt through the Io Xpand rather than a native PCIe desktop slot. This matters when comparing its KONA 1 card with an internal PCIe board: the source still needs compatible SDI cables, the workstation needs real Thunderbolt support, and the host/software combination must recognize both the enclosure and the installed card. The manual lists Windows 11 computers with Thunderbolt 5 or 4 (and supported USB4 variants), plus Mac M-series systems or Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 and macOS 15+. It also says KONA cards need AJA Desktop Software, while the enclosure itself uses system drivers. AJA Desktop Software v18 for Mac is Apple-silicon-only; Intel Mac installs need the supported v17.6 branch.
Choose an app, not just a card ceiling
AJA's KONA series manual identifies Control Room as part of its software package, and the OBS Quick Start Guide v17.1 includes KONA 1 among the named devices. This assessment gives both applications a conservative one-source 1080p60 plan. It does not assume that the card's full timing table means every mode works identically across OBS, Control Room, each driver release and the Io Xpand host. AJA's format table and device manual should be checked for the selected source timing, interlacing, audio, reference and firmware configuration before a live job. The broad questionnaire labels “Thunderbolt” and “Mac” cannot encode generation, processor family, OS release or app version, so a result is a documented candidate, not automatic compatibility.
For an HD-only production route, the single channel and SDI audio can be useful without paying for a 12G card's extra format reach. Against the two neighboring bundles, KONA 4 adds higher 4K/Ultra HD timing options and more complex routing, while KONA 5 adds a 12G-SDI 4K60 route on a fast Thunderbolt 5 host. If the project needs 4K60 capture, either assess those more capable packages separately; do not treat KONA 1's 2K/HD/SD timing table as a 4K promise.
What to verify in an offer
AJA's manual distinguishes IO-XPAND-04 as the KONA 1 bundle, alongside the chassis-only IO-XPAND-01 and the -02/-03 packages with other cards. Confirm the exact code and that the card is present, then verify the enclosure, power adapter and Thunderbolt cable, card cabling, host port generation, current driver support and the intended application. Inspect the SDI signal format and embedded-audio needs rather than assuming that every connector supports every direction at once. The product documentation identifies the configuration but does not verify a retailer's contents, used condition, stock, warranty or price.
This is an evidence-led review of manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test. No measured latency, capture performance or ownership experience is claimed. Key specifications
Key details at a glance
| Signal input | One full-size bidirectional 3G-SDI input/output connector; signal direction depends on the selected KONA setup. |
|---|---|
| Confirmed capture formats | Single-channel 2K/HD/SD through 60p in AJA's format table; no 4K mode is listed. |
| Confirmed passthrough formats | AJA describes simultaneous SDI monitoring during capture. No corresponding 1080p60 consumer passthrough question option exists, so no passthrough matcher mode is assigned. |
| Computer connection | External thunderbolt io xpand enclosure containing a single-channel 2-lane pcie 2.0 kona 1 card. |
| Named compatible software | AJA Control Room (check the current AJA Desktop Software, card-driver and OS requirements) / OBS Studio (AJA OBS Quick Start Guide v17.1; this assessment assigns 1080p60 only) |
| HDR recording | Kona 1 can signal hdr metadata over sdi, but no application- and rate-specific hdr capture plan is established here. no hdr matcher mode is assigned. |
