A useful fit for

A broadcast, ingest or playout workstation that needs multiple configurable SDI channels or grouped 3G-SDI 4K/UltraHD capture through an AJA developer application.

The main tradeoff

It is an OEM/developer PCIe board, not a direct HDMI/USB streamer. DIN 1.0/2.3 cabling and app setup are specialized, and AJA's current and older sources disagree on the Corvid 88 PCIe lane/generation details.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the Corvid 88 capture an unencrypted HDMI source directly?

No. The reviewed Corvid 88 has eight configurable 3G-SDI ports, not an HDMI input. An HDMI source would need a separately verified conversion path into SDI; this board does not provide console-style HDMI passthrough.

What does the current source say about PCIe lane width?

AJA's current product page and 2026-11-01 specification sheet say PCIe 3.0 x4, while its Corvid comparison and published NTV2 17.1.3.1410 device reference say PCIe 2.0 x8. Treat it as a PCIe card, but verify the exact board revision before allocating lanes or choosing an expansion enclosure.

Does OBS establish a 4K60 capture route for this board?

No 4K60 OBS plan is assigned here. AJA's current matrix lists OBS for Corvid 88 on Windows and macOS, but OBS's plugin notes say 4K SDI transports need more testing; the reviewed OBS arrangements are one 1080p60 SDI source only. AJA's higher 4K/UltraHD modes are left to a compatible developer application and exact link configuration.

Current-reference AJA developer I/O · 8 configurable SDI connections · PCIe

The AJA Corvid 88 is a high-density capture/playout board for a production workstation or an OEM application built around AJA's NTV2 SDK. It is not a USB gamer capture device: it has no HDMI source connector, and a useful setup depends on the SDI link plan, the software that controls it, the workstation slot and the exact card configuration. This assessment uses AJA's current product page and specification sheet, alongside its versioned SDK and compatibility references; it does not claim hands-on testing or a validated custom application.

Eight configurable 3G-SDI paths

AJA describes eight bidirectional 3G-SDI connections. Each port can be configured as an input or an output by software, and the card is intended for mixed multi-channel ingest and playout. The bracket uses DIN 1.0/2.3 connectors, a smaller connector family than full-size BNC. Check every cable end and the actual card photograph before ordering adapters; a seller's generic “SDI” description does not tell you which connector is fitted.

The number eight describes the physical connection bank, not eight extra inputs plus eight outputs at the same time. When a workflow reserves a port for output, it is no longer an input; linked connectors also change how many independent sources can run. AJA's product material describes up to eight HD or SD channels and multi-format operation only when formats use a compatible clock timing. Treat the port-direction map, reference timing and application routing as part of the purchase decision, not as a setup detail to improvise after the card is installed.

4K is a grouped 3G-SDI workflow

The current AJA page advertises formats through dual 4K/UltraHD 50/60p, and its detailed table includes 4K and UltraHD timings through 60p. This is built from 3G-SDI connections: it is not the same path as a single 12G-SDI cable on a Corvid 44 12G. For 4K capture, the application has to group the required SDI links and use the corresponding source timing. The wide mode table is a ceiling for supported configurations, not proof that every mixture of high-rate inputs can run simultaneously on every motherboard.

For that reason the reviewed 4K60 arrangement is a single SDI source in a compatible AJA NTV2 developer application. I have not assigned a 4K OBS workflow, a monitor-passthrough promise, or a rate-specific HDR recording plan. AJA describes output as well as capture, but an independently configured SDI output is not automatically a low-latency pass-through from an HDMI console to a gaming display. If the job requires a live monitor feed, confirm the intended input/output routing, frame synchronization and output device in the application you will actually deploy.

OBS is a narrower option than the format table

AJA's Corvid compatibility matrix lists OBS Studio for Corvid 88 on Windows and macOS. OBS's AJA plugin uses the AJA device driver and NTV2 SDK; its own notes call for more testing of 4K and SDI-4K transport combinations. Those two sources support a conservative one-source 1080p60 OBS plan, not an inference that every format shown on AJA's card page works in OBS. The specific driver, plugin build and host still matter. For a multi-channel or 4K server, identify the developer application and its own Corvid 88 support before selecting hardware.

Confirm which PCIe specification applies

The host requirement needs extra care because AJA's public records do not agree. The current Corvid 88 product page and the specification sheet retrieved on November 1, 2026 list PCIe 3.0 x4. AJA's Corvid comparison page and its published NTV2 17.1.3.1410 device reference still list PCIe 2.0 x8. A direct request for an SDK 18 device-reference route returned the same 17.1.3 page bytes, so that lookup did not explain the revision change. The material confirms an internal PCIe card, but it does not let this assessment identify which lane-width record applies to every Corvid 88 board. Verify the exact board ID/revision and AJA's supported slot plan before relying on a workstation or Thunderbolt PCIe enclosure.

Cooling is another configuration check. AJA lists full-height and half-height versions as well as fanless forms. Its current sheet says a fanless board needs 100 LFM airflow across the heatsink at 25 C or lower. Do not choose a silent/fanless version without confirming that the host chassis can provide this airflow. The current product page does not establish one universal US retail SKU, included bracket, adapter, fan or cable set, so check the exact listing rather than assuming the image shows the seller's complete package.

Who should shortlist it?

Consider the Corvid 88 when a system integrator needs several configurable SDI inputs and outputs, a developer has a validated AJA SDK application, or the chosen workstation can accommodate the exact PCIe and cooling variant. For a single simple stream, its multi-channel routing, compact connectors and application qualification may be unnecessary overhead. For direct HDMI capture, USB connection, consumer console passthrough, or a plug-and-play OBS 4K workflow, choose a product whose exact source and software route documents those needs.

Before purchase, confirm that the source emits SDI at the required raster and frame rate, the cable/adapter matches DIN 1.0/2.3, the required ports can be allocated between inputs and outputs, the software supports the selected format, the board revision fits the actual PCIe slot, and the fan/cooling/bracket configuration matches the enclosure. These are documentation-based checks, not performance claims; no price, stock status, included package contents or independent compatibility test is asserted here.
