A useful fit for

A developer-oriented internal PCIe 12G-SDI board for a workstation using full-size BNC cabling, with simultaneous 12G 4K/Ultra HD capture and SDI monitoring.

The main tradeoff

Full-size BNC fits standard coax patching, but this 12G board needs an eight-lane PCIe 3.0 host and cooling/power planning. It provides SDI I/O, not HDMI pass-through or a consumer capture workflow.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the Corvid 44 12G BNC capture one SDI source at 4K60?

AJA’s model-specific timing table includes 4K/Ultra HD through 60p and says 12G capture and monitoring may be simultaneous. Use a 12G-SDI source and a supported NTV2/developer software route; verify host and signal-chain details.

Can I connect an HDMI console and pass 4K60 to an HDMI display?

No. The Corvid 44 12G BNC is SDI-only; its documented input and output connectors are full-size BNC SDI. AJA documents no HDMI input or direct HDMI consumer-display passthrough, so it is not a gaming passthrough path.

What connector and host should I verify for a 1080p60 capture on the Corvid 44 12G BNC?

This exact 12G version uses full-size BNC rather than the HD-BNC connectors on Corvid 44 12G. Confirm the 8-lane PCIe slot, cooling, power, height and included items in the seller’s exact offer.

Can the Corvid 44 12G BNC capture 4K60 while feeding an SDI monitor?

AJA documents simultaneous 4K/Ultra HD capture and monitoring over 12G-SDI. The monitoring path is SDI on full-size BNC, not a direct HDMI display connection. Verify the 12G source, monitor, software, PCIe host and board configuration; this does not establish HDMI output.

Current-reference AJA PCIe SDI I/O · full-size BNC · 12G-SDI

Corvid 44 12G BNC is the full-size-BNC version of AJA’s four-port 12G-SDI Corvid board. It must not be collapsed into Corvid 44 BNC: the latter is a 3G-SDI device. Nor is it the same connector as the HD-BNC Corvid 44 12G. The three names can look interchangeable in a short marketplace title, but they describe different signal generations and physical cabling.

4K monitoring and 8K are different arrangements

The current specification lists four bidirectional 12G-SDI full-size BNC connectors, an eight-lane PCIe 3.0 host interface and supported formats through 8K/UltraHD2. At 4K/Ultra HD, the sheet specifically states that capture and monitoring can occur simultaneously when using 12G-SDI. One compatible 12G input is therefore the conservative 4K60 path used in this assessment. It still needs a matching SDI source, correctly rated cable and software/firmware path.

The 8K case is not “four separate 4K inputs”: AJA says 8K/UltraHD2 over 12G uses the connections for either input or output, not both at once. High-frame-rate and 8K capabilities depend on host attributes and configuration. The 4K formats are listed through 60p, while OBS documentation says its AJA plugin needs more testing for 4K SDI transport and has no 8K implementation. Accordingly, this assessment treats OBS as a 1080p60 plan, and a separate 4K60 plan as an AJA NTV2/developer workflow, not a guaranteed OBS mode.

Full-size connectors and the exact board variant

The BNC version is for installations that want standard full-size coax connectors at the card bracket. Corvid 44 12G, without the BNC suffix, instead has four HD-BNC video connectors. Beyond the connectors, both pages describe the same broad four-port 12G class; the exact cooling and bracket arrangement still needs attention. AJA lists active cooling with a fan and passive cooling without one. It also describes low-profile and full-height variants, plus RS-422 and reference/timecode connectors whose physical access depends on the board/bracket choice.

Power and airflow matter. AJA’s specification gives 25 W typical and 32 W maximum and permits PCIe-slot or six-pin ATX power. Passive cooling requires a minimum 150 LFM of chassis airflow at 30 °C; active-cooling noise and the available bracket are documented manufacturer characteristics, not independent measurements. AJA’s product page does not publish one exact order code for every configuration. Before purchasing, verify the precise full-size-BNC variant, cooler, bracket height, any power lead and what the seller actually includes.

Software is not an automatic consumer workflow

AJA positions Corvid as developer hardware. Its software compatibility matrix names OBS Studio for Corvid 44 12G BNC, and the OBS AJA I/O plugin uses AJA’s NTV2 SDK and requires the device driver. That is materially more specific than assuming a generic video-capture source will find every PCIe board. It still does not certify every signal rate: OBS calls out additional testing for 4K formats and SDI 4K transports. AJA’s own retail applications, including Control Room, have limited feature support for Corvid products.

Current AJA software materials list Windows, macOS and Linux paths. The v18 macOS installation is for Apple-silicon systems running macOS 14 or newer; do not assume an Intel Mac can use that same package. For any system, confirm that the intended AJA SDK/driver, firmware, OBS build or third-party developer application all support the card revision and chosen transport. HDR signaling and metadata features are documented, but no exact HDR-recording rate is assigned because the application and complete format chain remain relevant.

When this version is a sensible comparison

Compare this model when a full-size BNC patching standard, four 12G-capable SDI paths or 4K capture with a separate SDI monitor output suits the installation. Choose the HD-BNC Corvid 44 12G if the compact connector is required. Choose either 3G Corvid 44 model only when the source is 3G/HD or the four-link 3G 4K arrangement fits the design; the 3G BNC suffix does not add 12G bandwidth. For a home console, HDMI monitor passthrough, VRR or USB laptop use, these cards are not substitutes for consumer capture hardware.

This review compares the specific AJA model pages, specification sheet and current OBS integration notes. It does not claim personal installation, measured latency, test results, stock or a particular seller’s bundle. The essential pre-order task is to confirm both the exact card variant and the whole SDI/PCIe/software chain, not just the four-digit “44” in the title.
