Setup

A pre-purchase capture-chain checklist

Use this checklist to catch setup mismatches before comparing small performance differences. Write down model numbers for the source, display, host and capture application, then trace the signal in order.

Source to capture input

  1. Confirm the source's actual video output connector and format.
  2. Check whether it is HDMI, SDI, analog video or another signal, and whether the capture card supports it directly.
  3. Confirm that the output is unencrypted and permitted for the intended capture.
  4. List required adapters, docks or cables; check whether they are included or sold separately.

Capture device to display

  1. Write down the display resolution and refresh rate you want to keep.
  2. Check the card's passthrough table for resolution, HDR and VRR at that rate.
  3. Confirm that the monitor/TV input, source setting and cable support the same mode.
  4. Do not assume the passthrough maximum is the capture maximum—or vice versa.

Capture device to computer

  1. For USB, check the required data generation and port capability; connector shape alone is not enough.
  2. For PCIe, check slot lanes, clearance, motherboard sharing and operating system.
  3. Check capture resolution, refresh, codec, color format and HDR in the host's app.
  4. Confirm the specific application and OS versions, not only the device's broad platform list.

Audio and operation

Decide whether HDMI audio is enough or whether chat, microphone or mixer audio needs an analog route. Check which inputs the card exposes, what adapter is required, and whether the capture application can select and mix those channels. If your workflow uses two computers, map both machines and every HDMI/USB connection separately.

After installation

Use the product-specific setup instructions to install current supported software and firmware. Test the source and display first, then confirm the host sees the capture device, choose a documented mode in the application, and verify the audio route. Save the setup that works; changes to refresh rate, HDR, cable, hub, app or USB port can change available modes.
